L'ENVOI
By: Rudyard Kipling (1919)
[To whom it may concern]
The smoke upon your Altar dies,
The flowers decay,
The Goddess of your
sacrifice
Has flown away.
What profit then to
sing or slay
The sacrifice from
day to day?
"We know the
Shrine is void," they said,
"The Goddess flown—
"Yet wreaths are on the altar laid—
"The Altar-Stone
"Is black with
fumes of sacrifice,
"Albeit She has
fled our eyes.
"For, it may be,
if still we sing
"And tend the Shrine,
"Some Deity on
wandering wing
"May there incline;
"And, finding
all in order meet,
"Stay while we
worship at Her feet."
I believe the poem is about how is god "left" him which allowed for so many lives to be lost during World War One and he hopes his god will come back.
ReplyDeleteThe poem is similar to Bless Me Ultima because the poem was talking about losing a goddess, and it was like how Antonio felt when he thought that God wasn't with him anymore. -Talyana Meadows

ReplyDeleteThis poem is following the path of religion. They are waiting for another go to come to them because their god left them. In Bless Me Ultima Antonio feels like his God has "betrayed" him or even left him.
ReplyDeleteI believe the poem could be related to religion. Such as Antonio doesn't really know what to believe in because he feels lost. The people in the poem feel betrayed by their god and trying to find new things to believe in.
ReplyDeleteThis poem relates to Bless Me Ultima because of the spiritual/religious aspects and Antonio questioning and doubting his religion yet continuing to try to find faith in it and stay true to it. "It made me shiver, not because it was cold but because the roots of everything I had ever believed in seemed shaken. If the golden carp was a god who was the man on the cross? The virgin? Was my mother praying to the wrong god?" (Anaya Page 81). "We know the shrine is void," they said, the Goddess flown- "yet wreaths on the altar laid-"(Kipling Line 7-9).
ReplyDeleteI feel like the goddess is referring to Antonio's innocence and how after he's lost it he wants to do anything he can to get it back. Or they could be connected by the goddess representing the virgin Mary and her leaving the altar could be Antonio questioning his beliefs
ReplyDeleteThis relates to BMU because Antonio thinks that his god left because he realized that there is other gods to worship (The Golden Carp)~ Amber Johnson & Haylie Reyes
ReplyDeleteThis poem in a modern day stand point could be interpreted, instead of literally, as a lost addiction. If you read very closely you can see that this Goddess he speaks of could represent an extremely wide range of things. If you really read between the lines and try to interpret the poem in a completely different way, the Goddess could represent anything from the person's favorite food to something as crazy as ecstasy(drugs). The people hear may have had an addiction ripped from their grasps and to them it is like a Goddess. As it is in real life, these people will do anything to get their Goddess(drugs) back. -Zackary Delheimer
ReplyDeleteIt relates to BMU because some people have seen the god, and they all still worship the god, and they all still have faith in the god. -Rowdy
ReplyDeleteThis poem relates to BMU in a way because the religion and people grow further away similar to Antonio and him starting to believe in the Golden Carp not his god. -Carter
what if you connect the person narrating the poem to Ultima? think about it, she's trying to get Antonio to see that he doesn't have to believe that what his parents are saying is right. the poem also relates to his belief. if you go back to chapter 10, Ultima was not the first to be asked to heal Antonios uncle. Science had fail, GOD TUENED ITS BACK, and Ultima's magic proved to be the strongest. Antonio is worried about it. Maybe he thinks that God as deserted him, just like the people in the poem, so what is he going to do now? I think ultima is trying to get him to see he has control over what he believes in. -Victoria Sommer
ReplyDeleteBless Me Ultima relates to the poem because they are both about religion. In Bless Me Ultima, Antonio is trying to figure out who he wants to believe in. In the poem the Goddess has left the people and like Antonio, the people are trying to figure out who to worship
ReplyDeleteThis poem is both related to real life and Bless Me Ultima in the same way. The people in the poem still worship a Goddess they know is not there, because they are waiting for another one to come along. They are desperate for something to believe in, no matter what it is. It is comforting knowing there might be something out there, so they blindly follow. In Bless Me Ultima, Antonio subconsciously knows what he believes in, or at least knows what he is leaning towards, despite his parents believing in something different. Their religion is empty to him, holding no proof or value, but still he stays in hopes that the tides will turn and he will be shown proof of his God. He is stuck between following someone who does not feel real to him, and someone that actually holds some moral value. Our modern world is very much like this, with so many people claiming to have belief in something they aren't even educated on. They are following a God like it is a fashion statement- simply because everyone else is doing the same. (Breanna M.)
ReplyDeleteThe poem relates to bless me ultima because them believing the goddess is still there is like Antonio believing he still has his innocence. His innocence is now gone because he wants "to believe" in the golden carp. And in a sense that he is also losing his religious innocence at the same time. He is also now questioning the religion he has been following his whole life which represents moving up in the hierarchy of needs triangle.-Alfredo Sanchez
ReplyDeleteThe poem connects to Bless Me Ultima by the beliefs of Antonio and the speaker. When Antonio sees the golden carp he wonders if his family is believing in the wrong god, but he just keeps believing in his god. Then in the poem, the speaker's goddess flew away and the speaker didn't know if to worship some other goddess, it went back to worship like it would do
ReplyDeleteThis poem Relates to Bless Me Ulitima because I feel like antonios mom kind of relys on religion to guide her. I feel like the people in this poem need to worship a god even after the god goes away to feel secure and safe within their selves.
ReplyDeleteJust like antonios mother, she prays to god about everything and in a lot of ways relys on god.
-Jordyn Raymundo
both Antonio and the people in the poem are trying to find a god to worship. in the poem, the people state ""For, it may be, if still we sing And tend the Shrine,Some Deity on wandering wing May there incline" which is saying that if they keep things neato, a god will notice it and let them worship. Antonio on the other hand is struggling to find which religion to follow
ReplyDeleteThe religious aspect in this poem relates to Bless Me Ultima by focusing on worshipping a god/higher power. Antonio's family worships the Virgin of Guadalupe and prays to her everyday, but occasionally it gets to the point where Antonio's faith in the Virgin leaves him. In the poem, it mentions how the people's goddess fled them and left them on their own, waiting for a new deity to worship. ("Albeit She has fled our eyes." Line 12). In Bless Me Ultima, Antonio has witnessed/experienced things that have left him with doubt in his beliefs, although Ultima would reassure him. Ultima wants to help Antonio have something to believe in and have faith in, and not feel lost or hopeless without direction.
ReplyDeleteI feel this poem relates to bless me ultima because they were worshiping a god then there god left so then they just waited for a new god to come that is kind of like Antonio how he was a christen but when he saw the golden carp he believed in it more because he saw that is was real and he had never seen his own god.-Gisselle Chapa
ReplyDeleteIn Bless Me Ultima, Antonio's family constantly praises the Virgin of Guadalupe. In the poem the people give presents and sacrifices for the Goddess. These two relate because both readings are praising a God that they believe in. In the book, Antonio struggles with two different path, being religious or forgetting religion and becoming a cowboy. in the end, Antonio will have to choose his career path. -Kaley
ReplyDeleteThis poem is a religious poem and relates to bless me ultima because as it mentions "fumes of sacrifice" can be compared to the nasty guts and insides and body parts of Antonio and his uncle. The wiggling hair ball from Antonio and the guts from his uncle are like tokens of them that are sacrificed to ultima's beliefs. When she barriers them its like an acceptance path for them. There is a lot of religion involved and it is more Catholicism religion than anything to me. This poem is religious based.
ReplyDeletethis connects to bmu because Antonio is questioning this religion that he knows nothing about and when he needed help couldn't the people in the poem have no real idea about the god and don't really know they just want to worship like Antonio without knowing that there were other gods he had no other knowledge now he knows that god isn't the only god-joel buckmiller
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Antonio feels betrayed by the loss of a god, but rather he feels confused at the sudden addition of a new one. All his life, he has believed on god, and now he has discovered something new and strange to him. This causes him to question the beliefs he has followed his entire life. Not only does he question his belief of God, but he even questions God himself when he says, "Perhaps that is why God could not forgive; He was too much like a man." He is comparing God to a mortal human man. This almost proves the questioning of his faith in God. So in relation to the poem, perhaps it is not the God that has flown away, but rather his own faith in God and the people worshiping the alter are the people that choose to stay faithful to the belief that they were given as a child, instead of questioning it. -Valerie Bonvillain
ReplyDeleteThe poem has goddesses and shrines so it relates to Antonio because in the book he is struggling with his religion. Since Antonio is catholic in the book he prays to a shrine/saints.
ReplyDeletethis relates to bless me Ultima because Antonio believes in god but he doesn't know what to believe because the power of god failed to cure someone but then ultima this person that is not a god did cure this person from his illness. he has seen this other "god" the golden carp but he has never seen god so he doesn't know what to believe anymore but he has this feeling to still believe in god no matter what happens around him.

ReplyDeleteI think that the goddess in this poem represents a sin. A sin that people know is wrong but continue giving in and scarifying pieces of themselves for. People keep giving into the temptation. The sin can be different for everyone. For example tony's sin could be believing in the golden carp even though he knows it wrong to believe in a different god. -Kaitlyn Hanson

ReplyDeleteThis connects to Bless Me Ultima because the both are talking about the loss of religion and how they are questioning religion. Antonio is questioning his Catholicism faith and if he believes in it or if he believes in the religion of the golden carp. But I think at the end of the poem that its saying if you work on it and keep it up you can still have/ believe in that religion and I think that's going to happen to Antonio with Catholicism.
ReplyDeleteThis poem relates to BMU in a way because the religion and people grow further away similar to Antonio and him starting to believe in the Golden Carp not his god. _ blake w
ReplyDeleteI think that not only did he stop believing in god but he doesn't fully believe in this new one. He is in-between beliefs so now he has no god, no one to believe in. being by himself he is lonely. all happiness and naivety and security is leaving with god and replaced by worry. only he can choose to get those things back.
ReplyDeleteI can related this to bless me ultima because in both the poem and the book a they were both worshipping a god then left. then Antonio is have trouble figuring out who he wants to believe in the Golden Carp or the Virgin Mary ~Daniel May
ReplyDeleteI think this connects to BMU because it talks of the people still worshipping even though the goddess has gone, and just like Antonio his faith is withering and the candle is burning out but he is still really trying to believe, But he fails to realize that God is always with him even if you cannot see, you Live by faith. He says that the power of God Failed but Really the Power of Man Failed.
ReplyDeleteThere is more meaning to this poem than just a goddess receiving an offering. In this poem, it stats that the goddess has "flown' and "Fled from their eyes." I think this could represent abandonment, but someone is still filled with hope. For example, when someone is abandoned somewhere deep inside of them they still believe that one day that person will come back. This may be the case with Orphans or maybe even stray animals. In the poem, it specifically says "The smoke upon your Altar dies, The flowers decay, The Goddess of your sacrifice Has flown away. What profit then to sing or slay, The sacrifice from day to day?" Which I think could be an emotional thought that someone might think when or after just being abandoned. All of this could be a weird, twisted metaphor for someone who was abandoned as a very young child and put into a foster home. It could mean that this person is hoping for their parents to come back or realize their mistake. -Tiffany Goldstein

ReplyDeletewhat if its about death and the "flowers decay." what if we are the flowers and the "goddess" is death. the wreath sounds like reap. like the whole death thing... the "sacrifice" is actually sacrificing time, the time till we die. we pray at her feet is to mean that we hope we wont die. but PLOT TWIST it's inevitable
ReplyDeleteBless Me Ultima can relate to this poem because both the book and the poem is relating to something religious. In the poem it describes to us how the goddess left the people and now they are waiting for a new god or something to believe in. Antonio is confused as to what believe in at the moment. Therefore he doesn't know what god he believes or that he even believes in anything. Just like in the poem and in the book they are waiting for a god or to confirm what they believe.
ReplyDeletethis poem relates to bmu because they are both about religion and Antonio is testing his faith because he saw the golden carp and has proof of a god instead of believing in something you cant see
ReplyDeleteThe poem relates to Bless Me Ultima because Antonio is struggling with beliefs in his religion. Antonio wants to believe in the Virgin of Guadeloupe because his mother wants him to be a man of the church and become a priest, but like the poem says the goddess leaves just like Antonio's faith in the Virgin. He sacrifice's his God to have faith in something that he believes in. The black fumes I think is the virgin being sad because Antonio has betrayed his God that the rest of his family has faith in.
ReplyDeleteThis poem relates to Bless Me Ultima because of the religious factors. Antonio's family worships the Virgin of Guadalupe every single day, but eventually, his faith starts to leave him. When he discovers of the golden carp, he doubts his god, and wonders why his power had failed. In the poem, it mentions how their goddess leaves them, and they wait for something else to believe in, to worship upon. "Albeit She has fled our eyes."(line 12) Ultima is one person who helps guide him with everything he witnesses and experiences. Both the poem and Antonio are waiting for confirmation on what to believe in.

ReplyDeletethis poem relates to the book Bless Me ultima because Antonio is kind of the up down if god is really real but Antonio is a religious person but the poem is the close to the book is kind of talks about the same thing it is mainly about the beliefs is the religious/culture side.
ReplyDeletein the poem, the author feels that he has given everything to his god. he has given shrines to him, made sacrifices, and offerings. and yet after all of that, his god has left/betrayed him when he needed him. so he starts to look for a new god to worship. Bless me Ultima relates to the poem in a very similar way. Antonio feels very much like the author of the poem. Antonio has given so much to God, trying to keep as innocent as long as he can. So that one day he may become a priest. he worships the virgin Mary when something good comes their way. And yet, when he needed him most as in the poem God failed/betrayed him. Except in BMU, another power other than God succeded. and on top of that, he has found out that their is another god, where as in the poem he has not found one, but is looking for another god.
ReplyDeleteThe poem opens up by characterizing the lack of not having the purpose to move on if everything you look forward to is not there such as for Antonio is to find the right passage to his destiny but has so many paths to go but so many that could lead to failure and he feels like he needs to be the ideal child for his parents and all his family including Ultima. The poem says " Stay while we worship at Her feet.", which in comparison to BMU it means that as long as you worship a god you will live a joyful life and no matter what path you choose you'll still be loved.

ReplyDeleteThis poem interprets a modern day reasoning of death. I feel a sudden rein of love by reading this poem. It speaks of death and waiting at the alter and the goddess leaving the human. I interpret this as a sacrifice of love. Even today you would die for someone that's deep In your heart. You would take a bullet for your mom, dad, sister, brother etc. and in this poem its an example of death upon another's life just as Ultima would for Antonio. If Antonio was in danger Ultima would save him or sacrifice herself for him. In the poem it talks about the goddess of sacrifice leaving the human. In my mind I feel as if the goddess isn't what its called. I think that the goddess is the spirit that watches over the human and once that human is dead it leaves and goes to watch over another person. This is a comparison to ultima. Ultima always watched over Antonio. with what? Her owl. Ultimas owl is Antonio's watcher or spirit that watches over him. This interpretation brings a lot to the mind because as you see many ideas and details in the poem you start to think what its talking about. Its talking about sacrifice and love and the spirit always watching over someone. Antonio I believe relies on ultima and trusts ultima with anything. I also believe that the smoke rising is all the bad you have done in your life. Yes Antonio has sinned. Hasn't everybody but one sacrifice can relieve him from that which resembles the black smoke. There are many comparisons you can make with BMU in this poem. I just stuck to believe in the word sacrifice.

ReplyDeleteconnections to BMU are evident in this poem. In the poem and in BMU religious beliefs and faith are challenged and in desperation people cling on to things that brings them peace of mind.
ReplyDeleteBless Me Ultima and the poem relate through religion. In Bless Me Ultima Antonio questions on what he believes as his God. In the poem the goddes leaves the people and they still worship her thinking she will be back if they continue to worship her - Candy R.
ReplyDeleteOn page 121 it says," You have been seeing only parts, she finished, and not looking beyond into the great cycle that binds us all." To me this refers to real life. You have to see all the parts to grasp at the bigger picture of life. This poem about the decaying flowers, the goddess, the wreath and even the sacrifice you refer to from the poem are only parts of what the poem is really trying show you once you put them together.
ReplyDeleteI think that how the poem about the goddess leaving can relater to how Antonio's family is always praying to the virgin of Guadalupe. it would also relate to how you would never Imagine loosing your god/goddess and in the poem the author talks about the goddess leaving and disappearing but the people still believe in them and just because they are not with you doesn't mean that they aren't protecting you or watching over you
ReplyDeleteit relates by showing that Antonio is losing his religion and wants to see a sigh that shows him that he is not believing in nothing
ReplyDeletebless me ultima and the poem relate to each other because the poem is about death and describes how death works and describes death but when you think about death the opposite of death is youth and I think that is how they relate in a way because antonyo is young and learning and is growing like a flower but when he gets older the flowers will die yet they will no longer have youth.
ReplyDeleteThe poem relates to BMU by talking about gods and goddesses. Antonio wants to believe in the golden carp but he also wants to belive in the virgin Mary.- Logan Hamilton
ReplyDeleteThe poem relates to bless me ultima because they both belive in religion. in the book Antonio and his family are constantly on their knees praying to the virgin mary to make sure everythings right. in the poem they pray to all these gods that they belive to be ture
ReplyDeleteThe poem is about a goddess who has left, but the people still give her offerings and worship her. And to me this means that the people understand that the goddess has left but they don't want to accept it and worship someone else because they are too scared that there might not be anyone else to worship.
ReplyDeleteThis poem can be interpreted in many different ways. One way to see it is the goddess the people were worshipping has either abandoned them or she was never with them in the first place. The people then decide to continue praying and worshipping for the goddess to either come back or in hopes that a new god or goddess will take them under his/her wing. Instead of taking on the world on their own, they are devoted to faith in some higher power to help them survive. This connects to Bless Me, Ultima because mother is highly religious, it is one of her main character traits, and she uses it to solve most of her problems as if it is the answer . But there's more than just this simple connection. What if the goddess abandoning the people is innocence, and the Anotnio is the people ? Then he would be constantly trying to regain something that he can never get back and hes having to find ways to fill the emptiness that is there, if he decides to accept that the goddess(innocence) is gone and he cant get it back. Or it could be humanity. Connecting to the night where the townsmen killed Lupito and no one could own up to the fact that they murdered a human, and now the townsmen are left alone , isolated, to fend for themselves, to think about what they've done, and no one being there to save them , no one to give mercy just like they didn't give mercy on Lupito. Could the goddess be Antonio parting for his parent's and his family's beliefs , and his family having to channel all their faith and expectations into something else. Could the goddess leaving lead to Atonio finding another Religion that's different from his own because he gave up on the idea of a god or a higher archey? The poem was left undetermined , undefined , without an end, just like Antonio's decision so far. Could the goddess be everyones expectations for antionio, and anotnio never being able to reach the goddess ? Or is the goddess Ultima ? Here to lead Antonio to a different path even if it may not seem like it at first. Also , to keep Antonio safe from the danges of the world so he doesn't have to take it on alone. This probably could've been better if my original version didn't delete :,) --Brooke Bible

ReplyDeleteThis poem relates to Bless Me Ultima because of the religious/spiritual aspects in both book and poem. The goddess leaving in the stanza can be Antonio slowly but surely losing faith along the ways where he question when god has been with him and why he does not fix the bad in life. the final stanza lines 2,3,4,5 and 6 can be him believing in a different god such as the golden carp or him, Antonio , making his own path and following his own beliefs.

ReplyDeleteIn a historical standpoint this can relate to how the German people lost their pride and hope and a leader to follow after their defeat in World War I. In the poem the worshippers lose their goddess to follow and in real life the German people lose a leader to follow but they both wait and keep hoping for someone else to take that goddesses/leaders place and fulfill them with Hope and pride again and while its to be seen if the worshippers got a new goddess to worship, for the German people the person who took that place was Adolph Hitler.
ReplyDeleteThese people are entirely lost without their goddess. They need a higher power to help explain life and death. Without reassurance that life has a deep and meaningful purpose, they don't know what to believe. Their undying hope is what keeps them going and without it they feel that they lack purpose. But if they have been betrayed by one goddess, who's to say they won't be betrayed by the next? This single thought can bring a person to question their beliefs and even the tiniest bit of wavering could diminish their faith all together. -Michaela Anderson
ReplyDeleteI think this poem relates in the first stanza of losing your innocence with the dying of flowers. Your goddess has flown away has a meaning to me of how his whole world of just the virgin mary has just been put as just a thought with the new presence of the carp and its power and this also could be related to the torn paths of his father and mother ---Cole Reed

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, this poem is very vague and could have many meanings. I personally think it is talking about the deaths from World War 1 and how people are trying to believe in something greater than themselves. They are all dealing with loses and their memory of their loved ones is starting to fade; the smoke, the flowers, their sacrifice. In the end of the poem Rudyard uses hopeful words like "if" and "may" meaning the people are still trying to remember and believe. This connects to BMU because Antonio is having issues with his beliefs. His innocence is "decaying" and he's trying not to sin, but he can't fully trust his God. He's trying to be hopeful, but he can't because he doesn't have stable beliefs. Belief = Faith = Hope

I think this poem connects with Bless me Ultima because in the book, Toni and his mother incessantly praise the Virgin of Guadalupe. The virgin Mary is used as a connection between the two cultures that he is struggling to choose from. In this poem, a goddess has left her people, but they remain to praise her. This relates to the book because Toni is slowly losing his innocence and religion. - Kameron D.
ReplyDeleteI think this relates to bless me ultima because whenever Lupito died, tony prayed. Yet Lupito still died
ReplyDeleteI think this relates to bless me ultima because whenever lupito died, tony prayed, but Lupito still died
ReplyDeleteAlthough this poem does relate a lot towards tony losing faith in his god with the appearance of a new one and how he is struggling to find any reason to hang on to his religion, I also think that it could be connected in some way to the loss of his brothers. They haven't all left but the brother that still remains is just a reminder of what he would have to give up or offer to his brothers. In this case it would be his lost innocence. - Francesca Gonzalez
ReplyDeleteThis also ties in with the Golden Carp in 'Bless me, Ultima' how people continue to worship and pray for a deity that left. They pray in hope that the said deity will come back to them. - Fatima Adame
ReplyDeleteThis connects to bless me ultima because in the poem the goddess has left them but they still worship her . And in the book Antonio thinks god has left him but he still tries to stay faithful to him.-Maya evans
ReplyDeleteThis poem relates to bless me ultima because Tony is finding new gods like the golden carp and finding out about magic beings. Even though he still is finding these new things he remains faithful to his catholic religion even though he cannot see Jesus, he still worships him.
ReplyDeleteThis poem relates to Bless Me Ultima by religion. In the poem it's about how their Goddess have fled and the people are trying to find someone to worship, and in Bless Me Ultima Antonio has loss a of belief in religion but Ultima is telling him he should believe in his Catholic religion. So in both the poem and Bless me Ultima both have a loss of Religion
ReplyDeleteThis poem is about a goddess that has abandoned humans. This relates to Bless Me Ultima because Antonio is questioning if god has abandoned him, due to events that he has witnessed where god didn't "show up". He's slowly losing his faith. Everyone he knows is religious, and that leads him to feel alone and confused. He has no one to talk to, and while he is in doubt, no one else is really questioning god like he is. Similar things are happening in the poem, where the narrator is questioning why the goddess left the people.
ReplyDeleteThis poem is about a goddess that has abandoned humans. This relates to Bless Me Ultima because Antonio is questioning if god has abandoned him. Due to events that he has witnessed, where god didn't "show up", he has lost faith in god slowly. He is wondering if god is as great and amazing as people say. Because everyone he knows is religious, he doesn't have anyone to talk about this to. This leaves him feeling alone and confused. Similar things happen in the poem, where the narrator is confused as to why the goddess left the people, and why people continue to try and get her to come back.
ReplyDeleteharambe is a belief and to some a powerful deity. People are capable of making their own gods and choosing to put their faith into absolutely anything.

ReplyDeleteThis Poem is about how their god as gone away and/or abandoned them. so there is no reason for them to sacrifice to their god anymore, but they don't know that he is gone. stated in stanza 1
ReplyDelete"The smoke upon your Altar dies,
The flowers decay,
The Goddess of your sacrifice
Has flown away.
What profit then to sing or slay
The sacrifice from day to day?"
the other two stanzas were when people lost their faith in god, they started to draft away because there was no point in worshiping something that's not there. while others stayed loyal. they hoped that the god would come back. the British were taking their culture in the time that he lived.so this is his representation of how he saw the merging of two cutures
when he says "the goddess of your sacrifice/has flown away" I feel like that's a reference to the Virgin of Guadalupe. they give everything to here but once ultima came into to town they quit going to her alter which brings us to the line "The smoke upon your Altar dies, the flower decays" no one is bringing her gifts and flowers so she flies away to another community or area. but once she is gone people worry and freak out so they bring her new gifts and flowers to restore peace
ReplyDeleteI believe the goddess of their religion has given up on all of humanity even though the people still pray to her. They still need her since they would be lost without her
ReplyDeleteIt relates to bless me ultima because they cant seem to find the virgin marry and struggle to find a religion with a god that they think is real. It explains the confusion in his faith because he is catholic but he sees the golden carp.
ReplyDeleteI think that our cultural identity shapes us to be the person we are today, because it gives you a background story and where you came from and what has maybe happened in your family. It can be really inspiring to a community when people stand up for their religion or ethnicity. The poem is talking about how "brown" people can still be some of the greatest leaders or rulers. Then it says that God loves the color brown because he loves everyone and doesn't judge them based on appearance.
ReplyDeleteThis poem is about a goddess, that humans worshiped, abandoned them. This relates to Bless Me, Ultima because Antonio is worried that god abandoned him, because when he needed god the most, he didn't show them a sign and didn't help. Antonio is gradually losing faith. Everyone he knows is religious, and makes him feel alone and confused. This is why both, the book and poem, are similar because they're both questioning their God.
ReplyDeleteI think this poem relates to bless me ultima because the people in the poem worshipped their god and its like she disappeared just like bless me ultima Antonio expects god to appear in person, and could feel like god has abandoned him.
ReplyDeleteThe poem relates to bless me ultima because Antonio thinks that his god is gone because he learned that there is other gods to worship such as The Golden Carp.
ReplyDeleteI think it is important to have a meaning in life because if we are just taught to do something then there is no diversity between people there are some people who think they have a meaning and then there are others who think they do have any meaning but I think that every one has a job in life and it is not to be all the same you view your importance of life how you want but it is good to have it.
ReplyDeletethe decaying flowers could be their hope dying for their god and waiting for a new one to come. They are trying their hardest to keep going but deep down they know what they are doing is pointless but they continue to try to find a new god. which is the definition of insanity. doing the same thing expecting a different outcome.
ReplyDeletethe absence of a god doesn't matter to the people in the poem you see the joy and love given even if the god isn't there is good. the narrator couldn't fathom the fact that they were worshiping nothing in a sense but even if credit is falsely given it is given. pi with all religions he learns excepts them as truth even though they may not be just as the people accept that there is a god even though there isn't one, the belief and the feeling belief gives you is all that matters.
ReplyDeleteI think the meaning in this poem that connects to Life of Pi is that "they" are loyal to the idea of worshiping a god and wont say no to any god that comes their way. Pi beleievs in multiple religions bc he likes characteristics from each one. or Maybe he just doesn't want to say no to all relgions and just pick one. just like "them" in the poem don't care what god comes along for them to worship they just want to worship a god.
ReplyDeleteTo call Mr. Piscine Patel a fool, would be foolish. It is the same for these believers. Call them fools, but while some people may be living by only logical reason, these people are living by the better story. Pi lets himself believe that three different religions are true, despite how highly illogical it seems. "They," in the story are just looking for something to believe in, however foolish it may be. These people, and Pi, are both telling themselves the better story in pursuit for a peaceful life. You have to decide whether you prefer the brutal truth, or if you'd rather decide to believe the seemingly preposterous. The believers, and Pi, both have my respect for being so good at telling a better story.
ReplyDeletewhen you worship the god you believe in you feel good and when you see someone worshiping to a different god there is no difference the only difference if who it is even though they do the same thing for the most part and you pray and everything the same
ReplyDeleteThe idea of worshipping THE one god of your religion over another one is wrong or rather not right compared to the worshipping of A god. The belief and process of worship is the same for every deity. And most wouldn't care if their god left they'd still have faith in a god filling the other's place
ReplyDeleteThe idea that you worship "the god" instead of a god is based on your religion. Believing in several religions means you believe in "a" god and not one specific one you have been taught to think of or keep the idea of. When you worship, you have a sense of hope and faith. most wouldn't know if their god had left of rather, wouldn't care because everything is the same to them.
ReplyDeleteI think this poem relates to life of pi because its saying that all gods are real if you believe in them. The followers are telling the narrator that they aren't fools and know there is no God there, and that no God is the right one to believe in or the wrong one. They only that that matters is your belief
